From 1 January 2020 a global sulphur limit of 0.5 percent will apply to fuel oil used in shipping. This will mean estimated additional costs in the sector amounting to as much as 60 billion USD. The question as to who will pay for this has already sparked fierce debate between shipowners, freight forwarders and transport companies. They will have to reach agreement in 2019, as shipowners are already imposing bunker surcharges to compensate. But what other effects will emerge as a result of the stricter climate-related specifications? Is maritime transport becoming significantly more expensive and will this perhaps open up an opportunity for more intensive general debate on quality, than prices? Things are changing in the world of maritime logistics, not only on the oceans, but also overland. The new Silk Road has created a new link between Asia and Europe to which various port hubs are seeking a connection. Yet that is not the only reason for the growth in hinterland rail traffic. Road networks are frequently overwhelmed and the waterways are suffering from the effects of climate change, as demonstrated by the droughts in the autumn of 2018. This changes the entire situation in the hinterland. The German transport journal DVZ will shed light on these two sets of issues discussed by two panels of international experts.
